What you don't want is a fast turning turbo shaft, spinning without a good flow of oil. EVEN if the oil cooler isn't in the loop, the oilpump is still sending oil to the turbos' bearings. If the motor is shut off while the turbos are still spinning VERY FAST, the oil in the bearings can "coke", do to the heat and lack of oil flow. That's my guess. I haven't looked in the manual, but I would have guessed that the oil cooler is used during high heat loads, not pressure. Wierd.
